Denison Earns 2015 Municipal Excellence Award

During the Texas Municipal League 103rd Annual Conference and Exhibition, held in San Antonio, the City of Denison was presented the 2015 Municipal Excellence Award. The award recognizes the city for its affordable housing program.

After a successful effort to remove several dilapidated buildings that posed health and public safety risks, empty lots without present owners became common-place in certain areas of town. To address the increasing number of vacant lots, Denison created a neighborhood empowerment zone to encompass the area of town where vacant lots were most prevalent. The city then partnered with local financial institutions, a local building supplier, and local builders and contractors to develop and implement an affordable housing program. The City is working with eight participating builders to develop 30 lots in the neighborhood zone and even a few outside the zone. This far exceeds the initial goal to complete ten projects within a two-year period.

Speaking about the importance of partnerships in making the affordable housing program a success, Mayor Jared Johnson remarked, “I want to recognize the City’s partners in this program and thank them for making this program a success. This includes our partner banks, builders, contractors, and suppliers. Their participation has made this program a success.” The City remains committed to providing innovative solutions to help address the on-going demand for additional housing needs in Denison. The results are showing with new housing starts, in all price ranges, at the highest levels since 2006.
